Yesterday I went to Gloucester by train, and it wasn’t necessary to change trains.

The train pulled into Newport station and had to reverse to go to Gloucester.

I really like the railway route along the River Severn towards Gloucester. It is not normally possible to make this journey from Taunton without changing at Newport, but when there are works along the main line trains are sent to Newport to reach Gloucester before rejoining the main line at Cheltenham.

When I arrived in Gloucester I went to the Wetherspoon pub in the centre. It’s set in a former cinema and the way the conversion was done is very interesting. The transformation highlights the fact that this was once a cinema. It is possible to imagine that it is still a cinema, even if there is no darkness. I didn’t need a woman with a flashlight to guide me to a table.

When I arrived at the cathedral I took a look inside through the glass door. There was a staffed desk. Evidently there was a fee for entry. I hate having to pay to go into a church in England. I was not inclined to pay, and decided to stay outside.

When I said that there is an entrance fee to the cathedral, that’s not entirely correct. Payment is voluntary, but if you want to enter without payment you have to walk past a person at the counter and say you don’t want to make a donation. It’s actually very embarrassing to say no in a situation like that, and so you pay to get in. This is not a voluntary payment, but a forced payment.
Quando ho detto che l’ingresso alla cattedrale è a pagamento, non è del tutto corretto. Il pagamento è volontario, ma se vuoi entrare senza pagamento devi passare davanti a una persona al bancone e dire che non vuoi fare una donazione. In realtà è molto imbarazzante dire di no in una situazione del genere, e quindi si paga per entrare. Non si tratta di un pagamento volontario, ma di un pagamento costretto.
Unfortunately it is not possible to go directly from Taunton to Gloucester every day, i.e. without having to change at Newport. However, when there is work along the main line towards Cheltenham, and the line is blocked, trains are sent via Newport and Gloucester to reach Cheltenham and a direct journey is possible.
Purtroppo non è possibile andare direttamente da Taunton a Gloucester tutti i giorni, cioè senza dover cambiare a Newport. Tuttavia, quando ci sono lavori lungo la linea principale verso Cheltenham, e la linea è bloccata, i treni vengono inviati via Newport e Gloucester per raggiungere Cheltenham, ed è possibile un viaggio diretto.
