9
Q

What are some of the possible motives of Saudi’s strategy?

A
  • Better to sell more at lower prices
  • Drive out high-cost producers and discourage investment in new ventures
  • Put pressure on Iran
  • To cooperate with Russia OPEC

Q

Talk about the West Texas Intermediate (WTI)

A
  • When shale oil became a player in the market, OPEC changed their market behaviour to focus on retaining market share rather than supporting market price
  • The ability of shale oil producers to react quickly to market conditions was a fundamental driver of the change in strategic bahaviour
  • After Covid and the Russian invasion, prices rose again

Q

What were the impacts of Covid in the economy?

A
  • GDP plummeted
  • Oil prices went down due to the lack of demand to go out (social distancing)
  • Russia and Saudi engaged in an oil price war

Q

What are some of the environmental concerns of Fracking?

A
  • A lot of water is used
  • Water used when fracking can contain chemicals that should not spill to the watershed (Causing water pollution)

13
Q

How does fracking play in the energy trilemma?

A

Security- Shale oil and gas can make North America energy independent
Economy- Shale resources creates jobs and exports
Environment- Exploitation of oi and gas will increase co2 concentration and contribute to global warming. Water usage can cause contamination issues

Q

Talk about the trilemma with Russia’s war?

A

Security- Dependence of Europe on Russian natural gas gave Europe no leverage on Russia

Economy- Western countries are using the economic penalties of Russia to change their behaviour, but some European countries are experiencing economic problems because of it

Environment- European energy policy has been very proactive in promoting environmentally friendly technologies

Chemical Formula for burning hydrogen?

A

2 H2 + O2 -> 2 H20 + ENERGY

25
What is a brief summary of energy and life?
Everything needs an external source of energy
26
What is in a barrel of oil?
- Mix of different hydrocarbon molecules - Separated through distillation - Others require more processing and refinement
27
What kinds of distillation is done?
Fractional distillation
28
What is in gasoline?
- Mixture of hydrocarbons containing between 4 and 12 carbon atoms - Blending agents and other additives
29
What are in jet fuel?
- Kerosene which is a mix of hydrocarbons with carbon atoms from 6 to 16
30
What is in diesel
Average formula of C12H24 Can range from C10H20 TO C15H28
31
What is in heavy diesel
- Gasoil, which is used for heavy machinery C12H44
32
What is the composition of the atmosphere?
Nitrogen - 78% Oxygen - 21% Argon - 0.9% Carbon Dioxide - 0.04%
33
What is the fracking phenomenon?
Cheap gas
34
What is no longer a dominant fuel to generate electricity in the US?
Coal
35
What is the difference between primary and secondary energy?
Primary energy is a source of energy thats not subject to conversion while secondary needs conversion
36
Examples of Primary Energy
- Oil, natural gas, coal - Nuclear - Hydraulic - Wind - Solar
37
Examples of Secondary Energy
- Electricity - Fuels (Gasoline, Kerosene, Heating Oil)
38
What are the four forces of physics?
Strong Nuclear Weak Nuclear Electromagnetic Gravity
39
What are the different forms of energy?
Mechanical Chemical Thermal Radiant Nuclear Electric
40
Rule of thumb for units of measurement
World Consumption of oil is about 95 million barrels per day or about 35 billion barrels of oil per year Natural gas is about 370 billion cubic feet per day or 135 trillion cubic feet per year
41
Which hydrocarbon fuels contribute most to global warming?
Coal Oil Products
