What is an acid
When dissolved in water it’s solution has a ph value of less than 7
What is an alkali
Solution with pH value of more than 7
What does anhydrous mean
A substance that doesn’t contain water
What is atom economy
A measure of the amount of starting materials (as a percentage) that end up as useful products (e.g. iron in iron oxide)
What is the avargardo constant
Number of atoms, ions or molecules in a mole of any substance (6.02 x 10 to the 23)
What is a catalyst
A substance that’s speeds up a reaction
What is cracking
An industrial process to break down large hydrocarbons to smaller more useful ones (to use as fuels etc)
What is a fuel cell
Source of electricity supplied by an external source
What is a half equation
An equation that describes reduction (gain of electrons) or oxidation (loss of electrons)
For example in electrolysis:
H+ + OH- —> H2O
H2O —> H+ + OH-
What is a fullerene
Form of the element carbon that can exist as a large cage like structure based on hexagonal rings of carbon atoms
Le chatlier’s principle
The idea that when something changes in a system in equilibrium, the equilibrium will shift to cancel out the change and become the new equilibrium
Difference between a weak and a string acid?
-Strong acid produce a high concentration of hydrogen ions
-Weak acids produce a low concentration of hydrogen ions
