Chemotaxis
phenomenon in which somatic cells/bacteria/single cell organisms direct movements according to certain chemicals in the environment
Antigen
Any substance that can elicit a specific immune response
Epitope
A specific sequence of a protein or a carbohydrate recognised by the receptor molecule of the immune system
Allogenic
Genetically different although belonging to or obtained from the same species
Isotype
in all members of a species
Xenogenic
Derived from or obtained from as organism of a different species
Allotype
genetic variation between individuals
Idiotype
variation in the variable domain of Ig especially the hypervariable region
Fc
Fragent crystallisable region
Fab
Fragment antigen binding
Affinity
Strength of bond
Avidity
Strength of interaction (depends on the combined affinity of each binding site)
Polyclonal Immune Response
Multiple cell clones expand having recognised differnet, sometimes overlapping epitopes on the same antigen
Oligoclonal Immune Response
A limited number of cell clones expand (often due to a prolonged immune process (eg prolonged inflammation)
Monoclonal Proliferation
Usually represents malignant transformation of a single clone of B cells at some point in the process of differentiation
