deformation quiz Flashcards
What is deformation?
The bending, tilting, and breaking of the earth’s crust; the change in the shape of rock in response to stress.
What is stress?
The amount of force per unit area on a given material. ( push and pull, force, and the amount of pressure on the earth)
Describe 3 types of stress.
Compression: when an object is squeezed ( convergent boundary )
Tension: when forces act to stretch an object ( divergent boundary)
Shearing: the crust is getting pushed in opposite directions ( transform boundary)
What is a fault?
A break in a body of rock along which one block slides relative to the other.
What is a folding rock?
Bending rock
What factors would cause a rock to fault or fold? Be specific.
Folding: higher temperatures and pressure, ductile ( bendable) rock, and pressure applied gradually to a rock.
Faulting: lower temperatures and pressure, brittle rock, and pressure applied fast to a rock.
