depositional landforms Flashcards
formation of till plains
till= unsorted glacial material from erosion and weathering
form when an ice sheet detaches from main glacier and melts causing the till to deposit on valley floor leaving
formation of erratics
large boulder that is different type to surrounding rocks.
this is broken off by erosion and weathering transported by glacier then deposited when glacier has lost energy
what are the 5 types of moraines?
lateral, medial, ground, recessional,terminal
what is a lateral moraine?
material deposited on the sides of a glacier leaving a ridge when ice melts
what is a medial moraine?
formed when two lateral moraines meet in the middle of a glacier and deposit material
what is a ground moraine?
when it is carries under the glacier and abraded by the glacier and valley floor
THIS IS the ONLY sorted moraine
what is a recessional moraine?
moraine that forms at the end of a glacier when retreating glacier is stationary for a long time
what is a terminal moraine?
material deposited at the snout of a glacier on the valley floor
formation of drumlin
when glacier hits an obstacle that can’t be eroded so deposition from underneath the glacier builds up behind the obstacle. glacier moves over the mound then drags excess along the sides. causing a tear drop with a tapered edge
blunt end=stoss side
tapered end=lee side
name all the depositional landforms
drumlins, erratics, moraines, till plains
