erosional landforms Flashcards
(7 cards)
name all the erosional landforms
corries, arêtes, glacial troughs, hanging valleys, truncated spurs, roche moutonnees, ribbon lakes
corries
they are formed by deepening the bedrock through rotation, this leads to ice rotating downhill. abrasion and plucking promote development of steep back wall and water flows down a bergschrund and encourages freeze thaw to make corrie bigger
arêtes and pyramidal peak
when two neighbouring corries erode backwards to each other becoming narrow and a knife ridge is formed. more than 2= pyramidal peak
glacial troughs
as glacier moves down a valley, erosion creates a u-shaped valley with freeze thaw and weathering wreaking rocks at the side of the valley. as well as plucking ice to tear pieces away
truncated spurs
interlocking spurs are left behind from a river, abrasion and plucking erodes the tips of the spurs, steep cliff outcrops are left
ribbon lakes
extensional flow within glacier can create more erosion in bedrock. deep narrow depression is created. so when glacier retreats, it can be filled with meltwater
roche moutonee
ice melts upstream (stoss) and increased pressure results to a smooth surface on the stoss side. as pressure reduces, the water refreshes downstream and plucks the rock that has been frozen. leaving jagged surface in the lee side
