fluvioglacial landforms Flashcards
(5 cards)
formation of meltwater channels
streams of meltwater formed by high temperatures, channels can flow in, infront of or around the glacier. HIGHLY EROSIVE
if meltwater channels lose energy, they deposit sorted material this causes a braided stream.
formation of kames
meltwater transports and deposits eroded material on a retreating glacier. material collects within a depression on top of the glacier. when melted completely, material is left of the valley floor leaving a mound of material.
kames are fine sorted material finer than the first
formation of eskers
an esker is a mould of a glacial meltwater channels. material is deposited when subglacial meltwater channels lose energy. due to hydrostatic pressure, the mound builds up and retains its shape
formation of outwash plains
when a glacier retreats, there is a large amount of meltwater released (higher temperatures). meltwater loses energy so deposits material infront of the glacier.
it is sorted into layers. gravel and rock is deposited first then finer is on top
