What is the coach’s duty of care regarding mental health?
The coach has met his or her duty of care to refer to an appropriately qualified mental health professional if he or she suspects the presence of an undiagnosed or untreated mental illness.
How should a coach assess a client’s mental health issue?
The coach has reasonably determined that the client’s mental health issue will not interfere with the client’s ability to identify, set and work toward appropriate goals in coaching.
What should a coach ensure regarding therapy and treatment?
The coaching does not contradict or interfere with any therapy or treatment being undertaken by the client. This may require consultation between the coach, coachee and any mental health professional/s involved.
What are the limits of a coach’s competence?
The coach is able to recognise and work within the limits of their training and competence with respect to mental health issues.
What is the expected benefit for the coachee in coaching?
The coachee is likely to gain benefit from entering into, or remaining in, the coaching relationship.
