Infant Fed by non-oral means

Jaw and tongue movements are strong enough for feeding

Jawns firm; rotam chewing allows for a good bite on a hard cookie

Tongue movements increase to include elevation, rotary chewing is well-coordinated, biting is sustained

Able to chew most foods including meats and raw vegetables with a well-graded and sustained bite, drinks from cup with firm jaw

Takes cereal or poured baby food from spoon

Attempts to hold bottle
6-8 months
Holds and tries to eat cracker but sucks on it more; consumes soft food that dissolves in mouth; grabs spoon but bangs on it or only sucks
6-9 months
Finger feeds self portion of meals of soft table food; and food it fed by adult

Dips spoon in food, brings spoonful to mouth, but spills food by inverting spoon before it goes into mouth

Scoops food with spoon and brings to mouth

Demonstrates interest in fork; may stab at food, proficient at spoon use
