Diabetes Flashcards
(20 cards)
What is diabetes mellitus (DM)?
A metabolic disorder characterized by the absence, deficit, or resistance to insulin leading to hyperglycaemia
Diabetes mellitus can be classified into two main types: Type 1 and Type 2.
What are the two types of diabetes mellitus?
- Type 1: Insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM)
- Type 2: Non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM)
What are the risk factors for Type 1 diabetes?
- Family history
- Viral infection
What are the risk factors for Type 2 diabetes?
- Obesity
- Hypertension
- Poor lifestyle
- Diet
What is the main cause of Type 1 diabetes?
Destruction of beta cells predominantly by an autoimmune process, possibly of viral origin
The immune system attacks and destroys insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.
What are the causes of Type 2 diabetes?
Multifactorial causes including both genetic and environmental factors affecting beta cell function and tissue sensitivity to insulin
Can Type 2 diabetes be prevented or delayed?
Yes, through lifestyle changes
What are the management strategies for Type 2 diabetes?
- Lifestyle changes (e.g., HIITS, starvation diets)
- Insulin tablets
What are the management strategies for Type 1 diabetes?
- Insulin injections
What is the role of physiotherapy in diabetes management?
- Secondary to complications
- Awareness of complications e.g. healing, hyperglycaemia
- Education on lifestyle changes (exercise, diet, etc.)
What complications can arise for people with Type 2 diabetes?
- Higher musculoskeletal pain
- Falls due to peripheral neuropathies
Fill in the blank: Type 1 diabetes is characterized by _______.
[absence of insulin]
Fill in the blank: Type 2 diabetes is often linked with _______.
[obesity]
True or False: Type 1 diabetes can be caused by lifestyle factors.
False
True or False: Type 2 diabetes can be managed with lifestyle changes.
True
Define type 1 diabetes
An autoimmune response where the body attacks the pancreas stopping the production of insulin.
Type 2 diabetes cause
An insufficient level or absence of insulin where it does not work properly. This is usually associated obesity.
Define diabetes
A metabolic disorder. It is absence deficit or resistance to insulin leading to hyperglycaemia

Poor lifestyle
Hypertension obesity
