Q

What is Cystic Fibrosis

A

Autosomal Recessive,
When CFTR protein (found on cell wall) is absent, mutated or not enough of them. They allows chlorine to leave and enter cell.
No CFTR protein=chlorine can’t leave cell
Which Water moves into cell
No water out of cell, so mucus builds up around cell.
So, thick mucus clogs organs, such as the lungs, pancreas, and intestines.

Q

What is a pleiotropic allele? How are pleiotropic are related to hereditary disease?

A

A pleiotropic allele will be responsible for a lot of symptoms related to 1 disease (ex: Cystic Fibrosis and sickle cell disease)
