Digestion Flashcards
(11 cards)
What are 4 stages of food processing?
Ingestion, Digestion (chemical & mechanical), Absorbtion, Elemination.
What enzyme is present in the mouth? Where are they produces? What does it do?
Salivary amylase is produces by saliva glands. It’s used to break down the complex sugars (starches) before they get further.
What is created as a result of chewing and tongue movements?
Bolus
_________ protects lungs from food moving into trachea.
Epiglottis
Where does bolus go after being chewed?
Esophagus
_______ is muscular contractions that help food move through the esophagus.
Peristalsis
What is the function of stomach?
To mechanically process food and turn it into chyme with three muscle layer (LCO) movements. It also breaks down proteins using enzymes.
What is the enzyme that break down proteins is called in stomach.
Pepsin
What does gastric juice contain?
HCl, salts, enzymes, and mucus.
What is the pH level of stomach? What separates acid from getting into the small intestines?
pH is 2-3. Pyloric Sphincter closes when there’s no food to prevent acid spillage.
