Digestion & Energy Systems Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is a system?
A system is a structure and function of something, consisting of different parts that work together to perform a job.
What is a closed energy system?
A system where energy can be transferred in or out, but matter remains constant within the system. The mass within the system remains the same.
What is digestion?
Digestion is the breakdown of food into smaller molecules.
What is mechanical digestion?
Mechanical digestion is the physical breakdown of food using our teeth, grinding, chewing, tongue, and muscle movement.
What is an open energy system?
A system where both energy and matter can be exchanged with the surroundings. Matter (e.g., water vapor) and energy (e.g., heat) can enter or leave the system, leading to changes in both mass and temperature.
What is chemical digestion?
Chemical digestion is the chemical breakdown of food through enzymes and acids.
What role does saliva play in digestion?
Saliva contains enzymes that begin the digestion process.
Where does chemical digestion start?
Chemical digestion starts in the mouth.
What is the process of digestion initiated by saliva?
Saliva → Enzymes
