Organisms & Survival Flashcards
(27 cards)
What are producers?
Organisms that make their own food.
Examples: plants, algae, bacteria
What are consumers?
Organisms that eat each other for food and energy.
Examples: Humans & animals
What are decomposers?
Organisms that break down dead organisms for energy.
What are herbivores?
Herbivores are primary consumers that eat only plants.
What are omnivores?
Omnivores are secondary and tertiary consumers that eat both plants and meat.
What are carnivores?
Carnivores are secondary consumers that eat meat.
What are decomposers?
Decomposers break down organisms and recycle nutrients into the soil.
What is the food chain order?
Producers → primary consumers → secondary consumers → tertiary consumers.
What is population?
All the individuals of the same species.
What is competition?
When two or more organisms are competing for the same limited resources.
Examples of limited resources include space, suitable mates, and food.
What happens to resources during competition?
Resources available for growth, reproduction, and survival for competitors are reduced.
What is the general effect of competition?
Competition tends to be negative.
What is interspecific competition?
Competition between different species fighting over the same resources.
What does ‘inter’ mean?
‘Inter’ means between.
What does ‘intra’ mean?
‘Intra’ means within or inside.
What does ‘Bio’ mean?
‘Bio’ means living or life.
What are biotic factors?
Biotic factors are living things.
How many kingdoms are there in biotic factors?
There are 5 kingdoms.
Give examples of biotic factors.
Examples include plants, bacteria, and animals.
What does ‘Abiotic’ mean?
‘Abiotic’ means nonliving things or without life.
Give examples of abiotic factors.
Examples include water, rocks, pH, and temperature.
What are some examples of biotic factors?
Examples include plants, bacteria, and animals.
What does ‘A’ signify in the term ‘Abiotic’?
‘A’ signifies ‘without’ or ‘not’.
What are Density Dependent limiting Factors?
Factors that affect large dense populations.
Size matters and are biotic.
