what is the vitelline duct?

a narrow tube which communicates the apex of the midgut with the yolk sac

why does the midgut herniate into the umbilical cord during embryological development?

The cranial limb of foregut grows at an increasingly rapid pace and cannot fit within the abdomen, also due to the presence of 'relatively massive liver and kidneys'

what is Meckel's diverticulum?

Remnant of the vitelline duct due to 'nonrotation' of the midgut, the small intestine remains on the right side of the abdominal cavity and the large intestine on the left
