diseases Flashcards
(20 cards)
facts/features of bacteria
-prokaryote
-cause disease by damaging cells by releasing waste products/toxins that are toxic to the host
-in plants, bacteria live in vascular tissues and cause blackening and death
examples of bacteria
-tuberculosis
-bacterial meningitis
-ring rot
facts and features of a virus
-invade cells and take over the genetic machinery/other organelles of the cell
-they then cause the cell to manufacture more copies of the virus and host cell bursts releasing new viruses (lysis/lyse)
what does a virus need
needs your cells to replicate their genetic material
examples of a virus
-HIV/AIDs
-influenza
-TMV
facts/features of a fungi
-fungus lives in the skin of an animal
-its hyphae (form mycelium) grows under skin surface
-it can send out specialised reproductive hyphae which grow to skin surface to release spores
example of fungi
-black sigatoka
-ringworm
facts/features of protists
-organisms usually cause harm by entering host cell and feeding on contents as they grow
example of protist
-malaria
what is tuberculosis
-a disease that affects many parts of body
-kills cells and tissues
-most common is the lungs that are affected
-bacteria
what is bacterial meningitis
-infection of the meninges (membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord)
-may cause damage to brain and nerves
what is ring rot
-ring of decay in vascular tissue of potato tuber or tomato, accompanied by leaf wilting
-bacteria
what is HIV/AIDS
-attacks the cells in the immune system and compromises the immune response
-virus
what is influenza
-attacks respiratory system and causes muscle pains and headaches
-virus
what is tobacco mosaic virus
-causes mottling and discolouration of leaves
-virus
what is black sigatoka
causes leaf spots on banana plants reducing yield
-fungus
what is blight (tomato and potatos)
-affects both leaves and potato tubers
-protists
what is ringworm
growth of fungus in skin with spore cases erupting through skin to cause a rash
what is athletes foot
-growth under skin of feet (between toes)
what is malaria
-parasite in the blood that causes headache and fever
-may progress to coma and death
-protist
