evidence used in classification and phylogeny Flashcards
(7 cards)
what is phylogeny
-the study of evolutionary relationships between organisms
-how closely related they are
what do any 2 species living today have
a common ancestor
what happened in the 1970’s
-huge technological advances
(gene sequencing)
-meant that genetic analysis showed more information about the Prokaryote kingdom
how were archaea more similar to eukaryotes
-Similar RNA polymerase
-Similar DNA/RNA synthesis mechanisms
-DNA associated with proteins
what do other bacteria have making them more different from eukaryotes and archaea
-Different membrane structure
-Different flagella structure
-Different RNA polymerase
-DNA not associated with proteins (histones)
what is a monophyletic group
a single common ancestor and all of its descendants
-On a phylogenetic tree includes a ‘node’ and all of it descendants
what is the difference between phylogeny and classification
phylogeny- study of evolutionary relationships between organisms
classification- process of placing living things into groups
