Small Intestine vs Large Intestine in the Pig
Small Intestine is much bigger in length also it will connect to the stomach. The Large Intestine is like its own little pouch.
Anterior vs Posterior
- Human and Pig
Human: Anterior is the side with the face; Posterior is the side with the butt
Pig: Anterior is towards the head; Posterior is towards the butt
Purpose of bile
To emulsify or break down fats
Cecum
First part of the large intestine
Parotid gland
Salivary gland by the ear
How to tell if pig is male or female?
Look at pictures on classroom, but a female pig has a urogenital papilla; Pointy looking thing right above anus; Also if looking at inside, females have ovaries that you can look for
Submandibular gland
Salivary gland by the side of the jaw
Sublingual gland
Salivary gland under the tongue
Proximal vs distal
Proximal: Closer to point of attachment; arm or hip or leg
Distal: Farther from point of attachment
Medial vs lateral
Medial: towards the middle
Lateral: Away from the middle
Ductus deferens
Carries sperm from the testes to the urethra
Kidney Location and Function
Located on far side of pig that is almost hidden
The kidneys form urine
Dorsal vs Ventral
- Human and Pig
Human: Dorsal is the side with the butt, Ventral is the side with the face
Pig: Dorsal is where their back is; Ventral is where their belly is
Duodenum
Leads out of the stomach into the small intestine
Gall bladder
Small and pear shaped under the liver
Spleen
Flat piece underneath/ left side of the stomach. It fights infection.
Rectum
Heading towards the anus and coming out of the large intestine
Mesentery
Covers the abdominal organs
Ovaries
Located near the rectum
Urinary bladder
Connected to a flap that looks like a tube; Look at pictures
Pancreas
Looks wrinkled and near the spleen; under the stomach. Produces insulin and glucagon and lots of enzymes; Exocrine gland
Sensory papillae
AKA taste buds; Located on the tongue
Are pigs born with open or shut eyes?
Open
Masseter muscle
Look at pictures; in the jaw next to the submandibular gland
