Diversity, Equity, and inclusion (guest lecture) Flashcards
(17 cards)
conscious bias
connected and consistent with intent (you know what you are doing)
can be expressed as overt negative behavior
unconscious bias (NORMAL)
implicit bias refers to the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner
NORMAL and a reflection of how our minds operate and stereotypes we don’t realize we hold (learned behavior by family-unaware/ignorance)
EX:
sorority girls: party a lot, mean, exclusive
faculty members: development
medical doctors: hard to contact, demanding, intelligent, bad hand writing
the elderly: weak, wisdom, advice, slow drivers
how does unconscious bias manifest in behavior
one such way is through “accidental bias” or microaggression
microaggressions
everyday verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs, or insults, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicates hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to target persons based solely upon their marginalized group membership
ex: some people get it all the time like multiple mosquito bites
intent
praising self (own intent)
impact
focus on what it resulted into
are all stereotypes bad
some can benefit recipients, but are generally reductionist
EX: model minority stereotype (generic)
seems to say positive things about asian americans BUT artificially homogenizes Asian Americans
drives wedge between minoritized populations
stereotypes of docility and submissiveness protect status quo
microaggressions
the example (intent) could be good while the message (impact) may turn out to have a bad impact
