Why should differences be valued?
Different backgrounds can influence approaches to situations in different ways.
What did you learn about in your diversity and inclusion seminar?
Unconscious bias and the tendency to stereotype.
Being aware of privileges.
Mindful communication.
Can you give an example of a project where an effort has been made to make it inclusive?
On one of my Century projects, the contractor was organising a project dinner but one of my colleagues was doing Ramadan. I called up the contractor requesting to push it back until after Iftar when they could break their fast.
Why can encouraging diversity be good for business?
Makes everyone feel valued – people have different opinions on how to approach situations. Encouraging diversity is the step to understanding difference and being compassionate.
Can you tell me about the Equality Act?
Introduced in 2010 to legally protect people from discrimination in the workplace and society generally.
It replaced: Sex Discrimination Act, Race Relations Act, Disability Discrimination Act.
Name some protected characteristics under the Equality Act.
Age, Disability, Gender reassignment, Marriage and civil partnership, Pregnancy and maternity, Race, Religion or belief, Sex, Sexual orientation.
