DNA and Evolution Flashcards
(10 cards)
Describe the structure of DNA
The structure of DNA is a chemical made up of two long strands, arranged in a spiral. This is the double-helix structure.
What is the relationship between chromosomes, DNA ,genes, genetic information, and nuclei
Cell
⬇️
Nucleus (found inside the cell)
⬇️
Chromosomes (found inside the nucleus)
⬇️
DNA (makes up the chromosomes)
⬇️
Genes (small sections of DNA)
⬇️
Genetic Information (instructions in the genes that control traits)
What are 3 types of INHERITED variation?
- Hair color
- Eye color
- Floppy earlobes
How does sexual reproduction cause inherited variation?
Offspring inherit one set of chromosomes from each parent. So, an offspring has a mixture of chromosomes (and alleles) from its two parents, resulting in genetic variation.
Genetic cross.
A | a
—————-
A | AA | Aa
a | Aa | aa
If you have a Capital A and a lowercase a, where A is the dominant trait, can you still pass on the recessive allele?
Yes.
What is the only time when you can see the Recessive trait?
When there are only Recessive alleles.
Which two cells pass on information from parents to their children?
Egg cell and Sperm cell.
How do organisms become endangered or extinct?
When a species is unable to adapt to changes in the environment, it can become extinct naturally.
