DNA and the Production of Proteins Flashcards
(5 cards)
what is dna
dna carries genetic information to make proteins. it has a distinctive double stranded helix structure which is held by complementary base pairs
what is the structure of dna
each base is attached to a phosphate molecule and a sugar molecule to make a molecule of dna. this is called a nucleotide. these nucleotide all join together. matching the complimentary base pairs, to form a strand of dna
what is protein synthesis
mRNA is a molecule which carries a complementary copy of the genetic code from the DNA, in the nucleus, to a ribosome, where the protein is assembled from amino acids
what is a gene.
a section of dna which codes for a protein
what is mRNA
determines the order of amino acids
