ecosystems Flashcards
(21 cards)
In ecosystems, describe a species?
A group of organisms who can interbreed to produce fertile offspring.
In ecosystems, describe biodiversity
: This is the variety of living organisms within an area.
In ecosystems, describe a population.
The number of individuals within a species living in a particular area.
In ecosystems, describe a producer.
An organism that can produce its own food using light energy from the sun
describe a consumer.
An organism who must consume food to gain energy
In ecosystems, describe a herbivore.
An animal that only eats plants
In ecosystems, describe a carnivore.
An animal that eats meat
In ecosystems, describe an omnivore
An animal which eats both animals and plants
Describe what is meant by a predator
An animal which hunts other animals for food.
Describe what is meant by prey
An animal that is hunted by another animal
Describe what is meant by the term niche.
A niche is the role an organism plays within a community.
What does a food chain show? Give an example?
Food chain: Shows the feeding relationship between individuals.
Describe a food web
A diagram to show all the interlinking food chains within an environment.
describe a community
A community is all the living organisms living in a particular area
In ecosystems, describe an ecosystem.
consists of all the organisms living in a particular area and the non living components with which they interact
Describe the term competition in relation to organisms.
Competition in ecosystems will occur between organisms when resources are in short supply.
Suggest resources that animals would compete for in the natural environment
Food
Space
Water availability
Mates
Suggest resources that plants would compete for in the natural environment
Plants are in competition for:
Nutrients Water Space Light/sunlight
Describe is intraspecific competition
Intraspecific competition occurs from individuals of the same species for all the resources they require
Describe is interspecific competition
Interspecific competition occurs from individuals of different species for one or a few of the resources they require
Compare the intensities of interspecific and intraspecific competition.
Intraspecific competition is more intense than interspecific competition because organisms are competing for more resources.
