Respiration Flashcards
(16 cards)
what is the aerobic respiration equation
glucose+oxygen —–energy + carbon dioxide+water
Examples of cellular processes that use energy
Protein synthesis
Cell division
Muscle contraction
Transmission of nerve impulses
State the equation of how ATP is made.
ADP+PI——-ATP
State the equation of how ATP is broken down.
ATP—–ADP+PI
What is aerobic respiration?
Aerobic respiration is the breakdown of glucose in the presence of Oxygen.
What happens during stage one of aerobic respiration?
1.Glycolysis
Glucose is broken down into pyruvate and produces two molecules of ATP.
What happens during stage two of aerobic respiration?
Pyruvate is broken down into carbon dioxide and water. This also produces a large quantity of ATP
State where in the cell, aerobic respiration occurs.
It starts in the cytoplasm and ends in the mitochondria
What is fermentation?
Fermentation is the breakdown of glucose in the absence of oxygen.
State the summary equation of fermentation in animal cells.
glucose—-lactate acid+energy
State the summary equation of fermentation in plants and fungal cells.
glucose—–ethanol+carbon dioxide+energy
Where in the animal, plant, and fungal cell will fermentation take place?
the cytoplasm
what is respiration
the release of energy from food through a variety of enzyme controlled reactions
what provides cells with energy
ATP
adenosine triphosphate
what is ATP
a molecule made up of one adenosine molecule and three phosphates
how much atp is produced during respiration
38 ATP
