dna replication Flashcards
(11 cards)
What do we know about proteins?
that they’re not THE genetic material
What two types of proteins are there?
structural proteins and enzymes
What are the two enzymes essential in DNA replication?
helicase- unzips DNA
DNA polymerase- lays down nucleotides
What do we know about DNA?
-stores blueprint required to produce organism
- %A=%T, %G=%C
- DNA is copied/ passed down from gen to gen (can be the same or only sim due to genetic mutations)
What is the process of the central dogma?
DNA- RNA- proteins
What are the differences between DNA and RNA?
DNA
- double helix
-ACTG
-large
-nucleus
-missing o group
RNA
- single strand
-AUCG
-smaller
-travel b/t nucleus and cyto
What is transcription?
-conversion from 1 form of smth to another
-DNA to mRNA
what is translation?
-conversion to a diff “language”
- mRNA to tRNA
Describe transcription from DNA to mRNA
helicase unzips DNA -> promoter region in the DNA tells RNA polymerase where to go-> RNA polymerase keeps it open, reading the template and making a complementary strand-> runs into terminator region causing RNA polymerase to fall off and go to cyto
Describe the post transcription.
pre-mRNA-> mRNA
introns (non-coding regions) are spliced by enzymes and exons are joined together
describe translation.
mRNA->RNA
tRNA matches anti-codon with codon region of mRNA
enters P and A site, P site matches, P site kicked out
