example study of documents
hey- girls and friendship in education
-investigated girls friendship networks in secondary skls using the notes girls passed to each other in classrooms
-allowed access to subjective views of girls
what are the 3 types of documents
-public
-private
-historical
strengths of public documents
+validity, ofsted reports (3rd party)are unbiased as there’s no ties to skl
+practical, can be easy to access- all skls will have a website also easy to compare
limitations of public documents
-validity, more likely to have bias on skl website or prospectus
-ofsted is only a snapshot, not. v representative- impression management on day
private documents strengths
for this study
+validity, intended audience is the author to reader, would not be meant for anyone else/ no Hawthorne or social desirability
private documents weakness
-practical, hard to gain access
-personal, ethical issues may gain guilty knowledge of a vulnerable group, student may feel privacy violation
-representative, not large no. of children
historical documents strengths
+can compare over time (skl policy/ behaiviour)
historical document weakness
- websites dont date back that far- time limit - practical
-ofsted created in 1992- not always existed - practical - validity, may be damaged
