Jane Elliot - discrimination/ labelling
- she was a primary skl teacher USA
-she deliberately discriminated in her classroom
-she told brown eyed students that they were inferior to blue eye students
- blue eye students got extra playtime and positive feedback
- brown eye students punished and negative feedback
-reversed her discrimination day 2
- whichever group that was labelled positively performed better on tests and had enthusiasm
- caused segregation between 2 groups

strengths of experiments

A

+ practical , easy to do around school and in skl so cheap
+ field exp- done in a classroom so dont change behaviour ( Hawthorne )
+ reliable - can be repeated, Rosenthal and Jacobsons method was repeated 242 times, also representative

limitations of experiments

  • ethical issue, children are vulnerable group and risk being deceived as cant fully understand
    -validity issues, adults may be viewed as teachers so likely to gain social desirability
    -Jane elliot- negatively labels students, could cause psychological harm/ SFP, also used negative impact on achievement
    -need consent
    -representative issues, classroom is a small sample size
