what is the example study of interview
Willis - learning to labour
- 12 WC lads, interviews them informally one on one (unstructured)
-conducted group discussions and observed them
-want see why WC boys in WC jobs
strengths of interviews
+validity, if children with friends may open up more
+reliable- structured interviews, no researcher bias, allows comparative data
+unstructured interviews, practical allow for clarification, esp WC, if language barrier, inc response rate that questionairres- isn’t left blank
+ethical, overt- dont deceive children important bc vulnerable
limitations of interviews
-validity issues, may be a ringleader in the room/ bully so others aren’t honest
-practical issue, need DBS check to get into skl- expensive and time consuming
- practical issue, gatekeepers unlikely to allow, takes time out of learning bc time consuming
-representative issue, won’t allow access to y11 and 13 bc exams and time consuming so gap in data
-ethical issue, may gain guilty knowledge if on bullying etc
-group interviews - ethical issue, cant trust all group members will keep confidentiality
-practical issue, need consent off parents bc vunerable group
- practical issue, need to build rapport
- structured interviews- no follow up Qs restricted
