What does Soluble Fiber do?
Dissolves in water and turn to gel during digestion. Slows digestion and nutrient absorption from the stomach and digestive tract. Helps to firm up stool and slow down digestion by absorbing H2O.
Name 4 soluble fiber foods.
- apples
- pectins
- gums (i.e. guar gum - Benefiber)
- mucilages
- peas and beans
- strawberries
- lentils
- carrots
- rye, oat bran, barley
-psyllium husk (Metamucil) - some fruits and veggies
What is the primary fiber in apples, pectins, gums (i.e. guar gum - Benefiber), and mucilages?
Soluble Fiber
What is the primary fiber in peas, beans, strawberries, lentils, carrots, rye, oat, bran, barley, psyllium husk, some fruits and veggies?
Soluble Fiber
Name 3 sources of both soluble and insoluble fiber.
Strawberries, Carrots, and Hemicellulose
What is insoluble fiber and what function does it serve?
A type of fiber that does not disable in water. Helps to add bulk to stool and keep the intestinal flow going.
Name 4 types of insoluble fiber
- Cellulose (in plant cell walls)
- Most vegetables
- hemicellulose
- psyllium husk (Metamucil)
- lignin
- whole grain foods
- flax
- cauliflower
- avocados
- wheat bran
- Berries (fruit with edible seeds)
What is the primary fiber in cellulose and most vegetables?
insoluble
What is the primary fiber in lignin, whole grain foods, flax, cauliflower, avocados, wheat bran, and berries?
insoluble
