Lorcaserin was approved by the FDA for chronic weight management in 2012 and taken off the market in 2020. RCTs for lorcaserin showed placebo-subtracted weight loss of 3.6% and 3.0%. However, post-marketing cardiovascular outcome trial showed that more patients taking lorcaserin (7.7%) were diagnosed with cancer compared to those taking placebo (7.1%). A range of cancer types was reported, with several different types of cancer occurring more frequently in the lorcaserin group, including pancreatic, colorectal, and lung.
