Ear & Mastoid Process - Diagnostics & Procedures Flashcards
(20 cards)
Audiology, test
A diagnostic study of an individual’s ability to hear
The term is derived from ‘audi/o’ meaning hearing and ‘-logy’ meaning study of.
What is audiometry?
The process of measuring hearing using an instrument called an audiometer
The results are graphically represented in an audiogram.
What is a cochlear implant?
An implanted device that assists those with hearing loss by electrically stimulating the cochlea
‘Cochle/o’ refers to the cochlea.
What does electrocochleography (ECOG) measure?
The electrical activity of the cochlea to test hearing
What is a mastoidectomy?
Cutting out part or all of the mastoid process to treat necrotic mastoiditis
‘Mastoid/o’ refers to the mastoid.
Define myringostomy.
Making a new opening in the eardrum to promote drainage or allow the introduction of artificial tubes
Also called tympanostomy.
What is the purpose of myringotomy?
Cutting the eardrum to drain pus
Also referred to as tympanotomy.
What does ossiculectomy involve?
Cutting out part or all of the ossicles of the ear to treat ankylosis of ear ossicles
‘Ossicul/o’ refers to small bone.
What is otoscopy?
Process of viewing the ear using an otoscope
‘Ot/o’ refers to the ear and ‘-scopy’ refers to viewing.
Define paracentesis of tympanum.
Surgical puncture of the eardrum to drain fluids resulting from otitis media
‘Para-‘ means near or beside and ‘-centesis’ means surgical puncture.
What is stapediolysis?
Releasing the stapes to restore hearing in cases of otosclerosis
‘Staped/o’ refers to stapes and ‘-lysis’ means breaking down.
What does stapedoplasty involve?
Forming part or all of the stapes to restore hearing
‘Plasty’ means surgically forming.
What is tympanometry?
Process of measuring the eardrum
A tympanogram is the resulting record, and a tympanometer is the measuring instrument.
-
Movement of ear drum and compliance under different air pressures
What is tympanoplasty?
Forming part or all of the eardrum to reconstruct a perforated eardrum
‘Tympan/o’ refers to eardrum.
What does the Universal Newborn Hearing Screening (UNHS) test measure?
Uses otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) and auditory brainstem response (ABR) to assess hearing
OAEs are measured by a probe in the ear canal, while ABR involves electrodes on the head.
What is the primary use of antibiotics in pharmacology?
Treat bacterial infections
Common oral agent includes Amoxicillin (Amoxil).
What are ceruminolytics used for?
Soften and break down earwax
An example is triethanolamine polypeptide oleate (Cerumenex).
What do decongestants relieve?
Congestion associated with cold, allergy, or sinus pressure
Common examples include pseudoephedrine (Sudafed) and oxymetazoline (Afrin).
What are otics?
Drugs applied directly to the external ear canal
They can be in the form of solutions, suspensions, or ointments.
Otopyorrhea
Purulent discharge from ear
