What is Cultural Deprivation?

A

When an individual/group of individuals missed out on opportunities like museums, zoos etc as children, so they are deprived of ‘culture’ and experiences and this leads them to suffer in the education system etc.

A

Bernstein’s Speech Codes. Elaborated VS Restricted. He says that the W/C typically are restricted in their language, using restricted, whilst the M/C are elaborated and able to code-switch depending on who they are speaking to.

Who talks about Parents Education and what do they say?

A

Douglas says that W/C parents value the education system less, as they felt it didn’t help them escape their cycle of poverty. Feinstein says M/C parents care a lot more about education and it affects their parenting style. They socialise their children towards (m/c) or against (w/c) the education system.

A

Compensatory Education schemes. Sure Start centres, Sesame Street etc. These things provide extra resources to schools and communities in deprived areas.

A

Poverty and a lack of material necessities, eg. housing, income, food/nutrition etc.

How can poor housing impact a child’s achievement at school?

A

Directly - overcrowding means they can’t study or get good sleep, for example.
Indirectly - overcrowding means the child is more at risk to accidents and may then be unable to come into school more often.

A

Howard says that poor food (little or bad quality) can mean that children have less energy and weaker immune systems, so it is more difficult for them to pay attention or even come into school.

A
