Effects of exercise Flashcards
(19 cards)
When do immediate effects of exercise take place?
During exercise
When do short term effects of exercise take place?
Up to 36 hours after exercise
When do long term effects of exercise take place?
Months and years after continuous exercise
What are the three immediate effects of exercise?
.Thermoregulation
.Increased hart rate
.Increased in depth and frequency of breathing
What is thermoregulation?
Heat is generated in are body as a result of the production of energy. The heat that is produced through muscle contraction raises the core body
temperature which causes fatigue.
What is increased hart rate?
As we start exercising heart rate increases and beats with greater force.
What can breathing rate go up to?
50 breaths a minute
What are the five short term effects of exercise?
.Tiredness and fatigue
.light headedness
.nausea
.cramps
.DOMS
What does DOMS stand for?
Delayed Onset of Muscle Soreness
What are cramps?
Painful involuntary muscle contraction
What are cramps caused by?
Strain of the muscle.
Often linked to dehydration and loss of minerals due to sweating.
What is light headedness caused by?
This is often caused by low blood sugar or a drop in blood pressure.
Likely to occur after sweating heavily.
What are the six long term effects of exercise?
.loss of weight
.muscular hypertrophy
.change of body shape
.cardiac hypertrophy
.decrease Resting HR (Bradycardia)
.increase in specific components of fitness
What is cardiac hypertrophy?
Increased size of the hart
What does cardiac hypertrophy do?
Each beat forces out a larger amount of blood than a normal hart
What is bradycardia?
Decreased resting hart rate
Why does bradycardia occur?
Cardiac hypertrophy means it takes less
beats in a minute to supply the body with enough oxygen at rest.
What does cardiac hypertrophy lead to?
Bradycardia (decreasing resting hart rate)
How do you work out cardiac output?
Hart rate x stroke volume
