Haryana had been ruled by which party and till when?
By the congress party till 1982.
Who was Chadhary Devi Lal?
He was an opposition leader and led the movement known as Nyaya Yudh. He also formed a new party Lok Dal. His party joined other parties also in opposition. He promised that once his party won the elections the government would waive the loans of farmers and small businessmen.
How many seats did Lok Dal and its partners win?
They won 76 out of 90 seats in state assembly. Lok Dal won alone 60 seats and congress only won 5 seats.
What happened Lok Dal won the elections?
Devi Lal became the new Chief Minister on being chosen by the MLA’s. After becoming the CM his government issued a government order waiving outstanding loans of small farmers and small businessmen. His party ruled for four years and lost the elections to congress in 1991.
Why do we need elections?
Because we cannot make every single person sit and make decisions in a large community. This is the only way which ensures that the leaders and representatives are according to the choices of the people.
What choices can the voters make in the elections?
1) They can choose who will make the laws.
2) They can choose who will form the government and take major decisions.
3) They can choose the party whose policies will guide the government and law making.
What are the minimum conditions of a democratic election?
1) Everyone must have a vote of equal value.
2) Parties and candidates must be allowed to contest elections and should offer real choices to the voters.
3) Elections should be held regularly
4) Candidate preferred by the people should get elected.
5) Elections should be conducted in a free and fair manner.
How does the electoral system ensure that the political leader provide service?
The electoral system ensures so by rewarding and punishing the leaders. They are forced to provide service even if it is for their own benefits. The people of the country rearward and punish them.
