At how many years are the elections for Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha held?
Every five years. After the five years end, the term of every elected representative ends and the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha get dissolved.
What is a general election?
Elections are held in all constituencies at the same time either on the same day or within a few days. This is called as a general election.
What is a by-election?
Sometimes elections are held only for one constituency to fill in a vacancy caused by death or resignation of a member.
What type of system of representation does India follow?
1) India follows an area based system of representation.
2) The country is divided into different area for purpose of elections. These area are k/a electoral constituencies.
3) The voter who live in an area elect one representative.

Our constitution is required that each constituency should have a roughly equal population living within it. Because every vote must have equal value.
Vidhan Sabha elections
1) Each state is divided into a specific number of Assembly constituencies.
2) Elected representatives are called Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA)

Each parliamentary constituency has within it several assembly constituencies.
Panchayat principle
The same principle applies for panchayat and municipal elections. Each village is divided into a number of wards or constituencies. Exam ward elects one member of the village or the urban local body.
What are constituencies also counted as?
Seats for each constituency represents one seat in the assembly.
