What does our constitution entitle every citizen?
Our constitution entitles every citizen to elect his/her representative and to be elected as a representative.
What was the government worried about regarding the weaker sections go our societies?
The government was worried that the weaker sections might not have the required resources, education and contacts to contest and win elections against the others. And the resourceful might prevent them from winning. And the government would be deprived of the voice of an important section. Making our democracy less democratic.
What is reserved constituencies?
Some constituencies are reserved for people who belong to the ST and SC. Only people from these sections can contest in these constituencies.

ST: 47
SC: 84
How does reserved seats for SC and ST not take away the share of any other group?
This is because the number is in proportion to their share in the total population.

What is universal adult franchise?
It means that everyone should have one vote and each vote should have one equal value.
No one should be denied from the right to vote as the decisions that the government take will also effect them.
Voting in India
1) 18 above can vote
2) Every citizen has the right to vote regardless their caste and gender.
3) Some criminals and people with unsound mind can be denied the right to vote but only in very rare cases.
4) It is the responsibility of the government to get the names of all the voters on the voters list.
5) The names of new eligible voters are added and the ones who move or pass away are deleted.
6) Revisions of list takes place every 5 years.
7) Gov has tried giving every voter an ELECTION PHOTO IDENTITY CARD

Political parties nominate their candidates who get the party symbol and support. Party nominations are known as a “ticket”
Requirements of standing up in an election
1) Criminals have some restrictions
2) Every person who wishes to contest an election has to fill the nomination form and give some money as security deposit.
What is the declaration system
The declaration system has been introduced by the Supreme Court. It has required candidates to give:
1) Serious criminal cases pending against them
2) Details of assets and liabilities of the candidate and his or her family
3) Education qualifications of the candidate.
Also this info has to be made public
