Electrolysis Flashcards
(10 cards)
Electrolysis
The decomposition of an ionic compound when molten or dissolved by electricity.
Cathode
Negative Electrode
Reduction Reaction Always
Least reactive Cation forms here.
Anode
Positive Electrode
Oxidation
Most reactive anion forms here.
Electrolyte
An ionic compound that will conduct electricity only when molten or dissolved in water.
Where does Current flow from ?
Positve Terminal to Negative.
Electrons are the exact opposite.
Non-metal Reactivty Series
Fluoride, Chloride, Bromide, Iodide, Hyroxide, Sulfate.
Electroplating
A process of electrolysis in which a metal object is plated with a layer of another metal. Object to be plated is on Cathode.
Uses of Electroplating
Improve Appereance and Resistance to Corrosion
Fuel Cell (Hydrogen-Oxygen)
A device which converts chemical energy into electrical energy using combustion reaction.
Advantages of Fuel Cells
Renewable, Lower flammibility, Zero Carbon Dioxide Emission, Non-Toxic
