Homologous Series
A series of organic compounds where each member has same general formula, similar chemical formulas, similar physical trends and each succesive memeber differs by a CH2 Group.
Isomers
Organic Compoundswith same molecular formula but different structural formula
Saturated Compounds
Carbon to Carbon SIngle Bonds.
Unsaturated Compounds
Carbon To Carbon Double Bonds.
Displayed Formula
Shows total number of chmeical bonds in the compund.
Strutural Formula
Displays atoms in order of their bonds.
Alkane Reactions
Combustion to give Carbon Dioxide and Water.
Incomplete Combustion to give Carbon Monoxide plus Water / (Soot) plus Water.
Substituition Under UV Light :
Halogenation - Gives alkyl halide plus hydrogen halide.
Test For Alkenes
Bromine Water
Positive Result - Reddish-brown to colorless.
Alkene Reactions
Combustion same as alkane
Incomplete Combustion same as alkane.
Addtion reaction with Halogens.
Hydrogen Halide Reaction where product has to be written is displayed format with hygron going to first hydrogen-carbon compound.
Reacts with water to produce Alcohol.
Fermentation
Yeast uses glucose to respire anaerobically producing ethanol and carbon dioxide.
Conditions:
pH 5-6
25 Degree Celsius
1 atm / 100kPa
Yeast
It uses renewable resources, batch process , very slow, ethanol produced needs to purified and low temperature required.
Hydration Of Ethene
Ethene is reacted with water to produce Ethanol.
Conditions:
300 Degree Celsius
60-70 atm
Catalyst Concentrated Phosphoric Acid.
Uses non-renewable resources, continuous process, fast, producs pure ethanol, high temperature and pressure required.
Alcohol Reactions
Combustion and incompelte combustion same as alkanes.
Dehydration using aluminium oxide as dehydrating agent to produce alkene and water.
Oxidation using oxidising agents such as Chromium Trioxide to produce carboxylic acid plus water. Heat under Reflux. Orange to green color.
Carboxylic Acid Reactions
Dissociates in water to give Hydrogen Ions and
Respective -noates.
Reacts with Metal to formula metal-noates and hydrogen. Observations : Metal disappears , white solid forms and bubbles of hydrogen gas.
Reacts with metal carbonates to form metal-noates plus carbon dioxide plus water.
