Q

in the electrolysis of a melt, what products do you get?

A

the expected ones, eg aluminium oxide gives Al and O2

Q

how can you tell what are the products at the cathode in the electrolysis of a solution?

A

the less reactive ion is formed, so either the h+ becomes h2 from the water or the metal atom is formed if it is less reactive (so copper, silver, gold, etc)

Q

how can you tell what are the products at the anode in the electrolysis of a solution?

A

if it is a halogen then that forms. if it is nitrate, carbonate, etc, the OH- becomes water and O2

Q

why are the products in the electrolysis of solutions not as simple as the electrolysis of melts?

A

because you have to take the H+ and OH- of the water into account
