Electrolyte and fluid compartments Flashcards
(4 cards)
1
Q
What are the relative concentrations of intracellular and extracellular sodium and potassium?
A
Sodium
Extracellular 135-145mmol
Intracellular 4-5mmol
Potassium
Extracellular 3.5-5.5mmol
Intracellular 120mmol
2
Q
How do electrolytes cross cell membranes through diffusion?
A
From a high concentration to a low concentration
3
Q
How does the cell maintain the concentration gradient through active transport?
A
Through the use of ATP and the sodium-potassium pump
4
Q
What is membrane potential
A
The charge created between the inside and the outside of a cell. The outside is positive as there is a higher concentration of sodium. The inside is negative as there is a lower concentration of sodium.
