Electrophillic Addition Flashcards
(6 cards)
1
Q
What does electrophilic addition show?
A
Shows how electrophiles attack the double bond in alkenes
2
Q
What are electrophiles?
A
Electron acceptors
Which are attracted to areas of high electron density
3
Q
What can electrophiles form from alkenes?
A
- alkyl hydrogensulphates
- halogenoalkanes from alkenes
4
Q
Give examples of the most common electrophiles
A
HBr
Br2
H2SO4
5
Q
In electrophilic addition, what happens when the carbon-carbon double bond is broken
A
Carbocation forms
( Carbon atoms with only three bonds, meaning it has a positive charge)
6
Q
Describe carbocations in terms of stability
A
- carbocations can have varying stability
- with tertiary being the most table and primary being the least
- the more stable the carbocation, the more likely it is to form
- in electrophilic addition multiple products can form
- but the major product is most stable
