Test For Aldehydes Flashcards
(5 cards)
What are the two tests used to identify aldehydes?
Tollen’s reagent test
Fehling’s solution test
Describe the test for Aldehydes using Tollen’s reagent
Tollen’s reagent can be used to identify aldehydes
It’s added to the solution being tested and warmed gently
Observations of Tollen’s reagent test
Positive - silver mirror will form if aldehyde is present
Negative - solution will remain colourless
Describe the test for Aldehydes using Fehling’s solution
Fehling’s solution is added to the solution being tested
And heated
Observations of Fehling’s solution test
Positive - brick red precipitate formed if aldehyde is present
Negative - solution remains blue, no observational change
