Isomerism Flashcards
(6 cards)
1
Q
Define isomers
A
Isomers are molecules that have the same molecular formula, but a different arrangement of atoms in space
2
Q
What are the different types of isomers?
A
Chain isomerism
Positional isomerism
Functional isomerism
Geometric isomerism
3
Q
What are chain isomers?
A
- where the length of the chain has changed
4
Q
What are positional isomers?
A
- where the basic carbon skeleton remains unchanged, but important groups are moved around on that skeleton
5
Q
What are functional isomers?
A
- isomers that contain different functional groups - the functional group changed e.g. cyclic molecules
6
Q
What are geometric isomers?
A
- isomers in which double bonds restrict rotation (e.g. E and Z isomers)
