Close, Tighten - Clockwise (CW)
Water valves, Pressure cylinders oxygen & propane, Gas Curb Valves
The Other Way - Counter Clockwise (CCW) - Hydrants, Hydrants street shutoffs, Gas Cocks
Hydrants street shutoffs - 17 turns, noticeable decrease 12 turns, nut usually off center on street side of chamber (yellow parkway 18 turns)
Flooded Basements
Occupied : Remove toilet
Vacant : Break into cast iron waste pipe
Remove clean out plug
Open street trap on sewer sideFlooded Roofs: Do Not Use HANDS!!!!
Use 6’ hook or applicable tool
Hose- stretch entire length under water, kink one end (if parapet high double kink) drape over & below roof level , release kink
Booster line to roof: Charge line&open nozzle, place under water, shut down and disconnect at street
Steam Leak ; Radiator
SAFETY VALVE - shut down radiator, replace safety valve or use wooden plug wrapped in cloth
FLOW VALVE - make certain valve is in OPEN position, replace fitting (CW), after flow valve restored it may be turned off
Overheated Ballasts -
SCBA must be USED when disconnecting ballasts
Electrical Emergencies - Treat all downed wires as live wires until On-Scene rep confirms wires de-energized
Do Not- Remove occupants from vehicles
Do Not - Move wires w/any hook or rope
Do Not - Place weighted object on downed wires
Do Not - Open house service
Downed wires in street:
Live wires down AND human life in danger:
-Notify dispatch life is in danger, specify location (address, pole #), request forthwith power removal & priority response of utility co., Request B.C.
Live wires down and NO Imminent Life Hazard:
Isolate area, notify utility co., and STAND BY UNTIL a crew responds…
(do we really wait????)
For wires down with or without life hazard:
-Immed. notify dispatch - priority utility response
Isolate
-Check nearby buildings for heat at fuse box, use Thermal Imaging Camera
-Stretch line w/fog nozzle at least 25’ away
Power Station/ Substation Emergency
All equipment at station considered energized until verifureication of power removal by on-site personnel
Unless human life in jeopardy, Do Not enter substation until arrival of rep
No Metal ladders or tools inside gate
Do Not enter fenced off areas without rep.
No Ladders(metal or wood) supported by metal superstructures
Oil Burner :
Methods to Disconnect Electrical Power:
1. Remote Control(red) -
PD’s,OLT,BS or frame bldgs. top interior cellar stairs
NLT, Apt houses - outside oil burner room
2. Fuse Box
3. Ignition Component at boiler - remove cover,place non-conductor between contact points
Fuel shut offs:
- At tank
- At oil Burner (w/275 gal tanks)
- On preheat or #6 oil, turn gas off to preheater(1/4 turn) and also shut electric
- > 275 gal tanks, may have a shut off on feed line near filter
Gas Boiler - Metallic Odor, low water or no water
sides may be CHERRY RED, boiler needs water
DO NOT ADD.. Boiler must cool
Fish Hook-
Barb Not embedded - back hook out
Barb Embedded - physician remove , No aid available push hook thru until barb protrudes, cut hook & remove
Vehicle Accidents :
- Stretch and charge line to protect trapped victims
- If gasoline leaking, disconnect battery(ground first)
- Vehicle to be towed - use a chain
Gasoline Leak - Automotive:
To stop leak - crimp line or plug line
Leaking tank- plug hole
cut straps & prop so leak above fuel
levelRing Cutter
Will cut in short period of time- less than one minute ( yea right)
Will not cut Stainless Steel
Oil Slick on Roadway
Check for sand OR dirt, spread on slick
No Sand - Call for sanitation sander
Use of water will only exacerbate the problem
Wheelchair lifts on NYCTA Bus
Drivers keyed switch AND keyed switch at lift must be in the off position and key removed
Officer insure lift secured, chocked, and stablized
