Tools 7 HRN & Cocloft nozzle Flashcards

1
Q

Open Nozzle is basically a solid tip Designed to be attached directly to the hose. It differs from MST in that no threads are provided at its outlet orifice.

A

Controlling Nozzle any nozzle which contains a mechanism for controlling the flow of water at the nozzle

Q

Fog is developed in the Peripheral type by directing a stream of water against a baffle which deflects the water through serrated teeth at the periphery, which action separates water into fine droplets.

A

The Impinging nozzle includes a series of small orifices which cause multiple streams to impinge on each other. The impingement breaks the water into fixed, non adjustable fog pattern.

Q

Nozzles should be washed in solution of soap and hot water. A light coating of oil should be put on all couplings and moving parts after cleaning. Identifying letters and numbers placed on nozzles and components shall be stamped on the coupling along the hub, adjacent to the coupling lug.

A

Controlling nozzles will be tested annually in August and whenever deemed necessary in accordance with schedules established by Division Commanders as follows; A. Two lengths of hose (100’) shall be stretched from the pumper, nozzle attached, water started and sufficient pressure developed to attain an effective stream.

Q

An increase from 1” to 1 1/2” (FDNY) threads must be used to allow o nozzle to 1” booster line. Engine pressures from 175 to 200 PSI will give adequate stream for most fire situations, however if greater reach and/or flow are needed the engine pressure should be raised to 250 PSI.

A

If the finger can be inserted one-half (1/2) the length of the first joint, the tip is in the straight stream position. An effective fire fighting stream, using the FT-1 tip, is one delivering approximately 180 GOM and requiring at least 2 men to handle the hoseline. Proper engine pressure must be provided.

Q

High Rise Nozzle Weight Approx 10 lbs Misc. Standard 2 1/2” shut-off with 1 1/8” MST T-handle allows members control of the nozzle

A

Every Battalion has at least one engine company assigned a hi-rise nozzle and all FDNY members have been trained in placing the hi-rise nozzle into operation. Dispatch policy dictates that every 10-77 will have at least one hi-rise nozzle equipped engine company assigned. It is the responsibility of the 4th due engine to bring the HRN to the Command Post. If this 4th engine is not equipped with a HRN, the officer shall contact the dispatcher for the identity of the engine company equipped with a HRN assigned on the box. Upon arrival the officer will have the unit bring the HRN, one length of 2 1/2” hose per firefighter and the standpipe kit with controlling nozzle and report into the IC at lobby command post.

Q

The High rise nozzle is designed to be used when standard interior handline attack methods are not possible, such as conditions caused by wind-driven Fires. The High rise nozzle is an 8 foot long aluminum pipe with a 68 degree 2 foot bend to provide proper angle for the water stream. The high rise nozzle is attached to a standard 2 1/2” FDNY shut-off. The shut-off is permanently attached to the nozzle. There is a T shaped handle that allows members operating the nozzle to control the direction of the stream and maintain control of the nozzle.

A

The tip is removable and Should be checked weekly during MUD and before Use. Supplied by 2 1/2” hoseline, the high rise nozzle will produce flows of 200-225 gpm at 50 psi nozzle pressure with water flowing. Units must use the standpipe pressure gauge and consider the number of lengths in the supply line. As a general rule when supplying the high rise nozzle with 3 lengths of 2 1/2” hose, the pressure at the outlet gauge should be 70 psi with water flowing and 80 psi when using 4 lengths.

Q

A Spotter should be in place to observe the operation from the exterior. This member must take a position to clearly observe and monitor the conditions in the fire apartment before, during and after high rise nozzle. Deployment Equipped with a handi-talkie on the appropriate frequency and a pair of binoculars, this Spotter will provide direction and progress reports to the IC and members operating. The Spotter will be in the best position to monitor the effects of the High Rise Nozzle.

A

Putting the Nozzle into operation will require the services of 2 Engine Co’s equipped with roll-ups,standpipe kits, forcible entry tools including a rabbit tool and the high rise nozzle.

Q

Depending on the situation, the 2 1/2” hoseline supplying the high rise nozzle may have to be stretched from three floors below the fire. Firefighters operating the high rise nozzle will use the T-handle to properly position the nozzle for optimum stream placement.

A

If multiple rooms are involved, it will be necessary to reposition the nozzle to ensure complete knockdown of the fire. If this is the situation, start with the window that the wind is blowing into and extinguish the fire in this room first. Then move to the other windows. Downwind of the original fire room and complete knockdown of the fire.

Q

A shut-off shall be placed in line one length back from the nozzle. When repositioning of the High Rise Nozzle is required, the supply line should be shut down at the shut-off located one length back and the nozzle opened to bleed the line. If repairs to the High Rise nozzle are required, the company officer shall contact Technical Services Division via phone and request a replacement. The out of service HRN shall be tagged with an RT-2 documenting the nature of the defect.

Q

The discharge rate of the cockloft nozzle is approximately 125 gpm. The cockloft nozzle is to be supplied by a 1 3/4” handline. The cockloft nozzle operates with the same pressure normally supplied to a 1 3 attack line and is ONLY to be used when /4” handline. The cockloft nozzle should NEVER be the primary attack line and is ONLY to be used when supported and protected by an additional conventional handline.

A

Prior to using a cockloft nozzle in a NFP Multiple Dwelling, consideration shall be given to cutting a vent hole over the main body of fire; this may relieve explosive gases, and reduce the possibility of the expansion of water to steam causing ceiling collapse. When using a cockloft nozzle in a NFP Multiple Dwelling, the preferred location for operation is immediately inside the apartment door. A HOLE APPROXIMATELY 3’X 3’ IS NEEDED IN THE CEILING IN ORDER FOR THE COCKLOFT NOZZLE TO FIT

Q

The Clearing between the top of the ceiling joists and the bottom of the Roof Joists must be a Minimum of 4” to enable the operation of the Cockloft Nozzle.

A

The cockloft nozzle should be inserted into the cockloft between the joists. operating members shall alternate the direction of the stream by rotating the nozzle 90 degrees and returning the nozzle to its original position to provide maximum coverage.

Q

the Cockloft nozzle can cover a large area from a single position, it may also be moved from apartment to apartment to extend its reach. The Use of the cockloft nozzle does NOT eliminate the need of pulling ceilings for final extinguishment and washdown

A

The Cockloft nozzle shall only be placed into operation at the direction of a Chief officer. And must consider the following Dimension of the cockloft Volume of Fire Type of Roof support Type and weight of Suspended ceilings Potential for roof/ceiling collapse
