emerging viruses Flashcards
(5 cards)
what is an emerging virus
causative agent of a new previously unrecognised infection in a given population
zoonotic
enzoonotic - animal to animal
specialist vs generalist virus
s= viruses that can only infect one host
g= virus that can infect a range of hosts
example of notable emerging viruses
(all generalist)
-flaviviruses (zika virus)
-filovirus-
ebola virus
-coronavirus
-influenza A
example of specialist virus
generalist viruses are more likley to emerge into humans
-measules
-HIV
example of viruses emerging right now..
-m pox (clade 1b and clade 2b)
HIV and SARS-COV2 was a zoonotic virus but now became a ‘human virus’
-what kind of virus are they
-adaptations
-both are emergent virus that have fully established in homo sapiens and now have become true viruses of humans.
HIV= specialists virus. adapted to human hosts
SARS= generlist virus. established in humans and adapted for effeicient tramsmission in humans.
