Thesis Statement - in a neoliberal economy the individual has the main responsibility, but does not fully have responsibility
Supply-Side Perspective
Why should individuals take responsibility?
Neoliberal/Marx perspective - everything is a transaction
Competition is good idea - gets more from everyone
Moreau et al (2006) - UK uni students have favourable position over others
Peterie et al (2009) - mental toll it takes on unemployed
Unemployed can game the system
Demand-side perspective
Why should govs train?
To promote economic growth/reduce unemployment/upskill
Heyes et al (2012) - EU introduced “training first approach” - is that individuals responsibility though?
Companies rarely train, why is this?
Moreau et al (2006) - expect employees to just be ready straight out of uni
Benefits/negatives for company
Paragraph 3
Neoliberal gov leading us this way - inequality
Harraway (2006) - Marx Perspective, this is all down to the economic system
People expected to demonstrate ‘principle of potentiality’
Everything should be tan as a business, employees need to increase their value (Tarnoff, 2016) - what if people can’t afford to increase value?
What if unemployed don’t want to increase value? Dangerous for the country if they get angry (Peterie et al, 2019)
