Classification

Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitor (ACE-Inhibitor)

Mechanism of Action

  • Blocks angiotensin converting enzymes, preventing formation of angiotensin II
  • Dilates coronary and systemic arteries
  • Decreases peripheral vascular resistance
  • Improves cardiac output

Indications

  • Congestive Heart Failure

Contraindications

  • Hypotension
  • Hypersensitivity
  • Pregnancy

Adverse Effects

  • Cardiovascular: hypotension, chest pain, hyperkalemia
  • Gastrointestinal: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite
  • Neurological: dizziness, headache

Administration

  • Adult: .625-1.25 mg IV
  • Pediatrics: Safety has not been established.

Special Considerations

  • May cause hyperkalemia in patients taking potassium supplements or medications that increase potassium levels.
