Differentiate Endocrine and Exocrine function in the pancreas
- Exocrine: produces pancreatic enzymes used in digestion; break down foods (95%)
- Endocrine: release hormone directly into bloodstream; produces insulin and glucagon to control blood sugar levels (5%)
What are the functions of the Endocrine System?
1) Produce hormones
2) Coordinates with the nervous system
3) Regulates growth, metabolism, sexual development
4) Responds to stress and injury
Compare and Contrast Type 1 diabetes and Type 2
- BOTH: occur when the body cannot properly lower glucose levels; both are disorders of the pancreas
- Type 1: people do not produce insulin; occurs more in children; non-reversible
- Type 2: people do not respond to insulin as well as they should; occurs mostly in adults; reversible
What is the fight-or-flight response? What starts this response? What does this response cause in the human body?
1) The body’s response to a stressful situation.
2) The body responses to a stressful situation by producing more adrenaline and cortisol.
3) This response causes increased heart rate and breathing, sweating, more alert, and muscle contraction.
What are hormones? What process do they go through to affect organ systems?
- molecular signals produced by cells of the endocrine system
- released by glands, circulate through body, attach to special receptor cells to do their function
Pituitary gland: causes milk letdown in nursing mothers and contractions during childbirth
oxytocin
